It can feel overwhelming to work out whether you have everything you need to welcome an au pair into your home. Tick one more thing off your list with these simple dos and don’ts for where your au pair will stay while they are part of your family.
Do prepare the room with a bed, a dresser, and a wardrobe or armoire so your au pair can properly store their belongings. Feel free to add a personal touch — a sign, some flowers, or another small item to help them feel at home. Make sure the room has two means of exit, such as a door and a window, in case of emergency.
Don’t use the au pair’s room as a walkway to another room (for example to take out the rubbish or reach storage), and don’t use it to store your family’s out-of-season clothes.
The au pair can share a bathroom with the rest of the household, including the children, but the bedroom should be a quiet, private space where they can study, unwind after a busy day, or call family and friends.
